Changing Habits: From Heavily Damaged to Health Hair with Simple Tips

We spend years damaging our hair without even realizing it — wrong products, bad habits, ignoring instructions. It took me a long time (and a lot of trial and error) to understand what works. So today I’m sharing hair care tips I wish I had known sooner — and that made a real difference in my routine:

🔹 Hair Masks

  • Always follow the exact time on the label — more time doesn’t mean more results
  • Apply to detangled hair so the mask penetrates evenly
  • Don’t skip the thermal cap or shower cap if recommended
  • Many masks only need 3–5 minutes — you can apply in the shower, in place of conditioner
  • For an extra boost, apply a lightweight oil before the mask

🔹 Conditioner & Shampoo Tips

  • Never apply conditioner on the scalp — always keep it a few inches from the roots
  • Use a metal detox shampoo followed by pH-adjusting products once a month
  • Follow instructions carefully — too much time with dye or mask can backfire

🔹 Towels, Frizz & Drying

  • Avoid cotton towels — they pull moisture and cause frizz
  • Use the capillarity method:
    • Gently squeeze water out with your hands
    • Avoid rubbing or twisting the hair
    • Let it air dry partially before using heat: 20 minutes is enough
  • This one trick dramatically reduced my frizz

🔹 Heat Protection & Styling

  • Always use heat protectant — spray or cream, doesn’t matter, but use it
  • Don’t tie hair too tightly (ponytails, buns) — it causes tension and hair loss
  • Choose the right brush/comb:
    • I prefer wide-tooth combs that glide but still grip
    • Detangle in sections, from ends to roots, gently

🔹 Hair Oils & Product Application

  • Lightweight oils are essential, morning and night, avoiding the roots
  • Rub the oil or product between your hands before applying — improves texture and distribution
  • Always read the label — every product acts differently

🔹 Chemicals & Coloring

  • Be aware of what type of chemical is being used, especially if combining treatments
  • If you use permanent hair color and decide to get highlights or go blonde in the future, well, it’s going to be tough
  • If you color your hair at home, follow the instructions strictly
  • Overprocessing can lead to discoloration and damage (especially blondes!)

🔹 Water Quality (Game changer!)

  • When we moved to our current home, I noticed my scalp itching and my skin was constantly dry
  • Turned out our water had extremely high chlorine levels — even more than our pool
  • After installing a filter with carbon fibers, everything changed:
    • No more itching
    • Hair became more responsive and soft
    • Skin improved instantly

🔹 Final tip: beach/pool protection

  • Before swimming, wet your hair with freshwater + oil or protectant
  • Rinse immediately after to remove chlorine/salt
  • Comb and moisturize right away

Caring for your hair is self-care, and it’s worth the effort.
These small changes made a huge difference for me, and I hope they help you too.
