How to Pack a Week’s Worth of Outfits in a Carry-On

The very first time I traveled to visit my husband (who was just my boyfriend at the time), I showed up at the airport with only a carry-on. I was staying for a whole week, and he looked at me, shocked: “Where’s your luggage?”

That’s when I realized I had mastered the art of efficient packing. And while my style has evolved a bit since then, I still prefer to travel light — but smart. Here’s exactly how I organize my luggage so I’m ready for any occasion without dragging half my closet around.

1. Two Pieces, Maximum

Airlines usually allow one carry-on plus a personal item. I use a soft-shell carry-on and a weekender bag that slips over my suitcase handle — super practical. Inside the weekender, I usually pack my shoes. I also make sure it has space for my small crossbody bag so I can board with just two items.

2. Shoes That Work Overtime

Shoes take up space, so I’m strategic:

  • One versatile heel or dressy shoe — I love my mid-height pumps in both nude and black.
  • One flat sandal — ideally with some embellishment so it works for both casual and dressier outfits.
  • Flip-flops or slides for lounging.

I wear the bulkiest pair on the plane and pack the rest.

3. Soft-Shell Suitcase Only

I avoid hard-shell luggage because soft ones have more pockets and flexibility. The front pocket is perfect for flat sandals, scarves, or a pashmina (which I also use as a light blanket on flights).

4. Packing Cubes = Game Changer

I never pack without them. They keep clothes compressed, organized, and easy to find.

  • One cube for workwear (if it’s a business trip).
  • One cube for casual outfits.
  • One small cube for lingerie and sleepwear.

I also use the small gaps created by the suitcase handle to store socks, pajamas, or hair accessories — no space goes to waste.

5. Outfit Planning

I always plan my outfits in advance and aim for pieces that can mix and match.

  • I never repeat tops (personal rule!), but I do repeat pants or outer layers.
  • I pack one or two “emergency” pieces — like a simple t-shirt, a light sweater, or a pair of shorts for unexpected weather.
  • I check the weather forecast and average seasonal temperatures before packing.

6. Fabrics That Travel Well

I choose materials that don’t wrinkle easily, so I don’t waste time ironing on vacation. If ironing is unavoidable, I check in advance if the hotel provides a steamer. If not — and if it’s a longer trip — I bring my own.

7. Be Realistic About Workout Gear

It’s easy to overpack gym clothes you’ll never wear. Be honest with yourself:

  • If working out is a non-negotiable part of your routine, pack a small cube with athletic wear and choose sneakers that can be worn both for workouts and sightseeing.
  • If you’re visiting a destination where you’ll walk a lot, you might already be getting enough exercise without hitting the gym.
  • For a flexible option, pack athleisure pieces that can be styled for casual outings (like leggings with a blazer) before you use them for an actual workout.
  • Only pack a dedicated running shoe if you truly plan on running — otherwise, a fashion sneaker or cross-trainer can do double duty.

8. Always Carry Essentials in Your Carry-On

Even if you’re checking a bag, keep these in your carry-on:

  • All lingerie and basics.
  • One complete outfit.
  • Most valuable clothing items.
If your checked bag gets lost, you can still get through a couple of days comfortably.

9. My Travel Toiletry Rules

  • Always travel-size everything.
  • Use multi-use products (like a cream that works as blush, highlighter, and eyeshadow).
  • Keep all liquids in a TSA-approved pouch for easy airport screening.

10. Accessories in Moderation

A couple of versatile pieces are enough — a belt, simple earrings, and maybe a statement necklace. I keep them in my weekender bag so they’re easy to access.

11. My “Mini Emergency Kit”

I never travel without:

  • A small sewing kit.
  • Basic medication (for headaches, allergies, stomach issues).
  • Band-aids.
  • Any adapters or voltage converters I might need.

Packing Checklist

✔ Carry-on suitcase (I prefer the soft shell)
✔ Weekender bag with shoes + crossbody bag inside
✔ Packing cubes (workwear, casual, lingerie/sleepwear)
✔ Versatile shoes (1 heel/a little dressy, 1 pair of sneakers, 1 flip-flop)
✔ Weather-appropriate extras (t-shirt, shorts, sweater)
✔ Travel-size toiletries + multi-use makeup
✔ Minimal accessories
✔ Pashmina for flights
✔ Workout gear (only if you’ll really use it)
✔ Mini emergency kit

With a little planning, you can travel light and still have something perfect to wear for every occasion. Trust me — once you learn to pack this way, you’ll never go back to overstuffed luggage.
